The Well-Appointed Savannah Home
by AJ Hetzel, Estate Sale Planner
A behind the scenes look into Savannah’s most fashionable homes!
The Mint Green Tag Sale Company has liquidated the personal property of a variety of traditional Savannah homes. From couches to crystal, we sell it all! Our experience ranges from everyday ranch style homes to historic downtown mansions. The items we sell tend to tell a story. Though each individual home develops a unique sense of place, we have noticed that the most prestigious estates in our area have curated these universal must haves:
Original Works of Art
From Marcos Blahove and Philip Saraf to Hattie Saussy and Myrtle Jones, elite Savannahians love to collect the works of local artists. We often find large oil paintings colorfully displayed in the foyers and common spaces of the home. However, we have also found important pieces unframed and rolled up on their canvases in the attic. Signed and numbered prints also abound, but there is no place for mass produced or cheaply framed artwork in the homes of the well heeled. Original art will instantly increase the level of sophistication to any decor.
The wealthy travel in style and their grand voyages are reflected in their home decor, from the Middle East to the Orient, and beyond! The items gathered abroad have also earned a prominent position in the well appointed home. Rather than trinkets and tchotchkes, we find taxidermy trophies from the Serengeti, hand loomed tapestries, large brass urns, hookahs and samovars on display! These items are special and of a caliber not to be found at the corner department store.
Local History Books
Savannah has a rich history, which has been documented by a panel of talented authors. We find signed copies from Charles Elmore, Bruce Feiler, Mary Kay Andrews, and of course John Berendt. These local favorites are almost always filed next to the leather bound classics that comprise the complete library. It’s evident that local Book Signings are attended by The First City’s most discriminating residents. Scattered throughout the home, we also find large scale picture books cataloging the works of Ray Ellis, architectural photo essays, and back issues of Savannah Magazine.
Well Made Furniture
Whether the home decor is comprised of a minimalist modern look, a traditional decor, a coastal, or an eclectic mix, the furniture is sure to be well made. From the classic Eames Chair to a traditional breakfront cabinet by Baker, the well appointed home will feature furniture that is hand-crafted and sure to withstand the scrutiny of the most discriminating eye. The attention to detail shows. Quality design is timeless and never goes out of style. Statement pieces are individually selected and blended with heirloom pieces to form a cohesive look that flows naturally from room to room, often under the direction of a professional designer.
What does Savannah have to show for her oppressive heat and humidity? World famous gardens! South Georgia greenery curls and writhes around cast iron gates as moss slowly creeps along a concrete bath. Under the watchful eye of a Grecian Statue, our gardens take generations to mature. Outdoor spaces are second to none in this town, and the pots, benches, fountains and statuaries that comprise them are coveted among our estate sale shoppers.
Hard wood floors are a fan favorite here in the Coastal Empire. Often, these floors are dressed in fine, one of a kind, hand-knotted carpets. Always accompanied by a custom fitted rug pad, quality carpets lay beautifully flat and fill the space proportionately. Motifs vary from Asian to Tribal and materials range from wool to silk. Rugs can be a significant investment, however they last a lifetime if cared for properly.
China, Linens and Crystal!
In Savannah, it’s all about Entertaining! From Baccarat Crystal Champagne Flutes and Sterling Silver Flatware, to Royal Doulton Fine Bone China; Our hostesses welcome their guests in style. China cabinets and linen closets are almost always filled to the brim. We often find these items in cared-for but used condition. These nice things are not just for display!
Want to live like the Savannah Elite? If you have acquired champagne taste on a beer budget, fret not! Estate Sales offer quality merchandise at a fraction of the cost, but shoppers need to be savvy! These one of a kind items sell quickly and buying is competitive. Learn the local etiquette before you go, and always remember the cardinal rule of negotiation, kindness matters!
